Urban cooling solutions for local governments and regions

In response to climate challenges, Water Connect supports local communities
with innovative, sustainable urban cooling solutions that are accessible to everyone.

Cities facing growing environmental, climatic, and social challenges

Local governments today are facing increasingly severe heat waves, which directly impact the quality of life in urban areas.
  • Global Warming: The Rise of Urban Heat Islands
  • Pressure on resources: the need to reduce drinking water waste
  • Public spaces under pressure: the need for inclusive and accessible spaces
  • High expectations from citizens: comfort, well-being, and modernity

Cities need to rethink their infrastructure by incorporating urban cooling systems designed for new uses.

Large-scale urban cooling solutions

Paris 2024 Olympic Village: Multi-purpose Fountains Serving the City

In preparation for the 2024 Paris Olympics, Water Connect has deployed its urban cooling solutions in the heart of the Olympic Village as well as in several Parisian districts.
Objective: To provide urban cooling infrastructure capable of withstanding intensive and international use, while seamlessly integrating into the public space.

Given the extreme heat and unusually high crowds, local authorities needed systems capable of:

  • provide universal access to safe drinking water
  • limit the use of plastic bottles in accordance with the AGEC law
  • create effective cooling zones in dense urban areas
  • handle very high traffic
  • fit into both temporary and permanent installations

The result: a proven large-scale urban cooling solution capable of bringing about lasting changes to the experience of public spaces, even in areas with very high foot traffic.

How do you implement an urban cooling solution?

In light of increasingly frequent heat waves, local governments must rethink the design of their public spaces to improve thermal comfort for users.
Implementing an urban cooling solution involves more than just installing equipment; it requires a comprehensive approach that takes into account usage patterns, technical constraints, and environmental considerations.

What types of urban cooling systems should you choose based on their intended use?

The choice of urban cooling equipment depends directly on the areas to be equipped and their foot traffic.
For effective implementation, it is recommended that systems be tailored to their intended uses:
  • in city centers: compact and aesthetically pleasing solutions suited for high-density areas
  • in parks and green spaces: measures to promote the creation of cool spots
  • in pedestrian zones: equipment designed to withstand heavy use

Multifunctional solutions that combine hydration, misting and cooling street furniture now offer the best results in terms of thermal comfort.

How can we incorporate sustainable, cooling street furniture?

The incorporation of cooling street furniture should begin during the design phase of urban projects, in collaboration with urban planners and landscape architects.
Local governments are now prioritizing solutions:
  • water-efficient and remotely controllable
  • made from sustainable materials
  • compatible with existing land-use restrictions
  • easy to maintain for technical services
This approach makes it possible to implement an urban cooling solution that is both effective and sustainable, and consistent with local environmental policies.
