Public Space Design:
Refreshing and attractive living spaces

Transform your public spaces into vibrant, lively places with innovative, fun, and inclusive refreshment solutions.

Public spaces need to be reimagined in light of changing uses and climate change

Today, the design of public spaces must address a wide range of challenges:
  • Heat in the city: rising temperatures and discomfort in open spaces
  • New ways of using spaces: a need for places to relax, play, and socialize
  • Lack of greenery: absence of green spaces in parks and urban areas
  • Accessibility: The Need for Inclusive Design for All Users

Local governments must now design spaces that combine thermal comfort, appeal, and sustainability.

Public space designs focused on comfort and appeal

City of Valenton: A Playground Transformed into an Oasis of Coolness

As part of its public space development project, the city of Valenton has installed the first “Mât Tonnelle” green fountain near a playground.
Objective: To create a refreshing oasis in a park without disrupting the existing environment, while enhancing user comfort.

Given the high foot traffic and exposure to heat in these areas, the municipality was looking for equipment capable of:

  • provide a shaded area for visitors
  • provide an accessible water source near the children
  • create a space conducive to relaxation and conversation
  • incorporating vegetation into a mineral environment

The result: a more pleasant public space that promotes well-being, social interaction, and the park’s appeal.

How can you create a refreshing public space?

Incorporate cooling from the design phase

In light of increasingly frequent heat waves, the design of public spaces must now incorporate solutions capable of sustainably improving thermal comfort.
Parks, squares, playgrounds, and pedestrian zones are often exposed to the sun and ill-suited for high temperatures.
To address these challenges, it is essential to adopt a comprehensive approach that takes into account infrastructure, land use, and urban constraints.

The goal: to create more pleasant, attractive, and resilient public spaces through urban oases of coolness.

What kind of equipment should you choose for a public space design?

The choice of equipment depends on the nature of the venue, its foot traffic, and the target audience.

For effective public space design, it is recommended to prioritize:

The best equipment is that which combines fun, refreshment, and ease of use.

How can we create a sustainable oasis of coolness in a park or urban space?

Creating an oasis of coolness in a park or public space depends on a combination of several complementary elements.

The most effective solutions combine:

  • water (fountains, misters) to cool the ambient air
  • shade (structures or vegetation) to limit sun exposure
  • refreshing street furniture to organize public spaces
  • materials designed to reduce heat retention
By combining these measures, local governments can transform their spaces into true cooling zones in a sustainable way, improving user comfort while enhancing the value of their communities.
